The Hermitage

2009 07 12 – Day 16 – St Petersburg

Not a hip place where hermits go, instead The Hermitage is one of the largest and oldest museums of the world.
The Hermitage faces Palace Square - 'setting of many events of worldwide significance, including the Bloody Sunday (1905) and the October Revolution of 1917. '

The Winter Palace (where The Hermitage exhibition space is)

The interior of the Winter Palace was extremely extravagant; the above stairwell, room and ceiling are but examples.

Befittingly for St Petersburg, the place is huge and many corridors looked like this.

Most of the exhibits were of classical origin... this one stood out for it's modernity. I think it's made of some kind of rubber.
