2009 07 29 – Day 33 - Aralsk
Aralsk has a small and well maintained museum of history containing exhibits, information and mini diaramas on everything from traditional Kazakh nomadic life through Soviet times and the towns growth from being a stop on the Moscow-Tashkent railroad, to its part in WWII and its current problems associated with the retreat of the Aral Sea.
How the Aral Sea should look from above and what it's like now. Some pretty alien looking fish populate those jars on the floor.
Mockup of the interior of a traditional Kazakh yurt and the various trappings of life of those times.
The museum owner, proudly showing his personal record of modern Aralsk history – the day Euan McGreggor and Charlie Boorman rode into town on their Long Way Round show (well worth a look).
