Urumqi to Beijing

2009 08 11-13 – Days 46-48 – Urumqi to Beijing train

Comfortable and cool in my air conditioned compartment, and unable to converse in any meaningful way with my Chinese room-mates, I settled back to watch the vastness of China roll by.

A welcome sight: the biggest wind farm I've seen with my own eyes.

Industrial Lanzhou, capital of Gansu Province

After the initial vast plains of the west, much of the jouney was spent cutting through or weaving in and out of hills and valleys.

My lasting impression of the journey, apart from the vastness of China, was the industry of the people. Whenever I looked out the window (except in tunnels!) there always seemed to be at least one construction project in progress.  Considering that the journey took about 42 hours, that's a lot of construction.
