Tallinn to Helsinki

2009 07 19 – Day 23 – Baltic Sea

The passenger ferry port of Tallinn is a conveniently short walk from the old town. You can see some of the new town skyline between the two ferries.


Arriving in Finland is a fairly delicate manoevure for such a big ship, weaving amongst the islets and broken headland, including passing by Suomenlinna

Best 50p breakfast ever?

2009 07 19 – Day 23 – Tallinn

My foot passenger ferry ticket cost me 300 EEK (Estonia Krooni – what a great name eh?) and for only 20 EEK (at that time roughly 50p) extra I could have breakfast on the ferry. This is what I got:

It was great! And it was a buffet too, so I could go back as much as I wanted! If only I'd been hungrier, I only ate what you see in the picture! (plus an extra glass of fresh orange & there's plenty of grub hidden by that lettuce leaf) (Viking Line advertisement deliberate because the breakfast was so goddamn good they earned it!)

2009 07 17 – Day 21 – Tallinn

The Sørlandet trainees step out together one last time.

Special mention has to be given to Jacob (left, 15) who, at the time of this photo was working his giddy magic on the Russian doll vodka girls:
If they wanted to see how Norwegian boys party they should meet them back here when they finished and they'd go for an ice cream or something... All the while he's busting his moves on his Segway and shooting them his winning smile...
Did they come back?
Of course they came back!

One last meal & some drinks. The next morning many trainees left at 4am back to Norway and most of the rest later in the morning... it was a little strange and a little sad to break up the group after our intense time together, the now quiet Sørlandet waiting for its next batch of trainees.

2009 07 17-18 – Day 21-22 – Tallinn

Tallinn is an old town... that now has some new bits! The old town is a pretty and laid back place... probably worthy of a long weekend visit.

Russian Orthodox Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. Just after I'd taken this photo, a smart car pulled up and a senior priest stepped out and followed these two green robed guys inside. I followed and was rewarded with some magical choral singing and priestly recital reverberating around the ostentatious interior. With such other-worldly/angelic sounds and environment I could easily imagine how, in times gone by, such an approach to religion could impress the local population into devotion.
No photography allowed inside so you'll have to go yourself :)
